Recognizing Pain in Animals is a website which provides guidance on how to recognise and alleviate pain in 10 groups of species commonly used in scientific research.

It includes links to the US Institute of Laboratory Animal Research’s (2009) report Recognition and Alleviation of Pain in Laboratory Animals (which can be downloaded as a free PDF from this link) and other related resources.

This resource was created by the US National Academy of Sciences Institute of Laboratory Animal Research. Copyright is retained by the National Academy of Sciences.

The resource will be of use both to early career and more experienced researchers whose studies may inflict pain, suffering or distress on laboratory animals, and to animal care and welfare staff.
